Freewing F-14 Tomcat Twin 80mm EDF Jet – Feature Review and Flight Demo

I don’t know about you, but everything I need to know about the F-14D is in the video. I actually bought this plane after watching this video the first time I saw it. That’s just me, I do love the F-14 Tomcat. When this supersize RC F-14 became available, I just had to have it!

Ever since I was a kid and saw the movie “Top Gun”, I’ve been in love with the F-14D Tomcat. Who doesn’t remember that blockbuster movie from the 1980’s. Anyways, let’s talk about this AMAZING and LEGENDARY airplane. Before I talk about the accessories and features of the F-14D Tomcat, we’re going to go back in time.

History Of The Grumman F-14 Tomcat

VF 2 Bounty Hunters

A LEGEND was born December 21, 1970. This was the F-14 Tomcat’s first flight! In 1974, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat made its debut replacing the F-4 Phantom II as the primary defense fighter for the United States Navy. The F-14 served as a fleet defense fighter, tactical aerial reconnaissance platform and the Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter.

The F-14 continued this role into well into the 1990’s. She was continually updated with the latest technology throughout her service life. The F-14 was upgraded with The Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system in the 1990’s making her even deadlier performing precision ground-attack missions.

During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980’s, the Islamic Republic Of Iran’s Air Force used F-14’s primarily as land-based interceptors. The F-14, flown by highly skilled Iranian Pilot’s, reportedly shot down at least 160 Iraqi warplanes (Mostly Mig’s) during the war while only losing 12 to 16 of their own. Half of those F-14’s lost were due to accidents.

Sadly, All Things Come To An End …

On September 22, 2006, the Legendary F-14 Tomcat took to the skies for the very last time ending the career of one of the most feared warplanes of all time. Take a look at her final flight in the AWESOME video below. This is a must watch video for all you aviation enthusiasts out there. Enjoy!

Grumman F-14 Tomcat – Last Official Flight – Worth Seeing

The F-14 Tomcat was officially retired on September 22, 2006 passing the torch to the more than capable Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. However, the F-14 Tomcat still remains in service with the Republic Of Iran Air Force, having been exported to Iran in 1976 during Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi’s reign, the last Shah of Iran.

In honor of this legendary aircraft …

… The Freewing F-14 Tomcat Twin 12-Blade 80mm EDF Jet Was Born!

What’s an F-14 without it’s ICONIC swept wings? They didn’t forget and they work while in flight! The Team at Motion RC was able to do this by creating a very strong wing box made out of light weight aluminum resulting in a very stable and dependable design. 1. The F-14 Tomcat looks just like the real thing. The makers sure did get the details perfected. I bet flying this RC plane is just plain awesome.

I also bet with the twin 80 mm fans it sounds like a mini jet too. I have always wanted to get into the RC Jet Flying hobby, but I am just a spectator currently.

When I do buy, I will buy the F-14 Tomcat. It just looks like it would be such a pleasure to fly. I have to read up on the radio controlling aspect first.

I don’t want to crash my first day and have my friends laugh at me. Where can I get some information to learn how to fly these? Are they just hands on?

    1. Hey Mike,

The Freewing F-14 Tomcat is absolutely beautiful and meticulously detailed. It looks even better in person! The F-14 is a super size scale aircraft. It’s over 5 feet long!

The dual 80mm fans are powerful and sound amazing. You have plenty of power and the F-14 is as fast as it looks. She handles like a dream and looks like the real F-14 while in the air.

The thing I like the most about the F-14 Tomcat is the wing box assembly for the swept wings. I’ve had other F-14’s in the past where the wing box assembly would fail in flight.

This airplane does not have that problem. The wing box assembly is made of light weight aluminum so it will not fail during flight.

Before flying the F-14 Tomcat, I would suggest getting a trainer and learning the basics first. Even though the F-14 is relatively easy to fly, you need to be an experienced RC pilot to fly her.

I’d hate to see you crash your F-14 on your first flight! You can also check online for your local RC flying club and find an instructor to help you get started.

I hope you join our great hobby and start flying soon. Check back in a couple of weeks. I’m going to add a few trainers that will help you start off on the right path.

Thanks for stopping by today and leaving your comment!

  2. OMG… I absolutely enjoyed reading this article! I love airplanes of all types. 5’ long is huge…the paint job and the fine details are breathtaking. You mentioned that you purchased the F-14D Tomcat as soon as you saw the video and I can certainly see why. What does it weigh and how easy is it to operate?

    1. Hi Monica,

I’m glad that you liked my article on the RC F-14 Tomcat Sale. I hope you get one while supplies last! I love airplanes as well and have ever since I could remember. Especially, the F-14 Tomcat!

You’re right about the size of the F-14, it’s HUGE! This is the first electric F-14 Jet produced in this size. The detail is AMAZING right down to the 2 pilots inside the cockpit.

What even adds t the detail even more is the LED lights all over the plane. The NAV lights stay on all the time as well as the landing lights. The strobes blink as they should too!

I hope you were able to watch the F-14 Tomcat flying at dusk. Although it’s not recommended to fly in the dark, you can fly the F-14. She lights up the sky!

The F-14 Tomcat weighs about 9 pounds or 147 ounces without the battery. It’s very light for it’s size and the dual 80mm ducted fan engines provide more than enough power to perform any and all aerobatic maneuvers.

The F-14 Tomcat handles exceptionally well and looks stunning while she’s in the air. Although the F-14 is relatively easy to fly, I would not recommend flying this plane unless you’re an experienced pilot.

This is a high performance airplane and can get away from you if you don’t know what you’re doing. The F-14 Tomcat flies as fast as she looks!

Thanks you for stopping by and leaving such kind words. I hope you come back from time to time because this is the first of many great RC planes I’ll be adding to the website.

Thanks again for visiting with us today,

  3. An incredible tribute to the F-14 Tomcat!

I’ve always wanted to get acquainted with model planes and this looks like a good buy. I didn’t know that they were retired in 2006. And interesting story about Pehlevi : )

I actually don’t have much experience with them and I would really appreciate if you could offer me a “Starter Aviation Pack”.

    Great deal!!!!

    1. Hello Tyler,

Unfortunately, they retired the F-14 Tomcat in 2006 due to the high costs to maintain it. With today’s stealth technology and 5th Generation fighters entering service, the time was right.

I’m sure they could have continued to upgrade the F-14 and she would continue to do her job well but times change and new airplanes enter service.

Thanks to the AWESOME Freewing F-14 Tomcat, we can still watch her soar like a bird. This is a highly detailed super scale RC electric jet. It’s almost as good as the real F-14. Almost!

Come back in a few days, I’m going to add an RC trainer you’re going to love. It’s a Cessna that is very easy to fly and is perfect for beginners. The price be be cheap too!

You definitely want to know what you’re doing before you fly the Freewing F-14 Tomcat. It’s very fast and not a toy. You are getting into a very exciting hobby.

I suggest you look online for a local RC flying club near you. You will meet a lot of cool people with different types of RC aircraft.

I saw the Freewing F-14 Tomcat at my local airfield and instantly wanted one. The gentleman at the field let us check it out and watch a couple of flights.

Thanks for stopping by today and asking your question. Don’t forget to come back in a couple of days to check out the trainer.

      Happy flying!

    2. Hello Tyler,

You were asking about a Starter Aviation Pack so I went and found the best RC trainer I could find. This is not your basic RC trainer.

The FMS Cessna 182 Sky Trainer has steerable front not wheel and 5 bright LED lights including landing lights on the wing and landing gear.

It’s a beautiful plane that looks as real as the real Cessna when she’s in the air. The price is good for this kind of plane and it’s easy to fly.

You can read my FMS Cessna 182 Sky Trainer review by CLICKING HERE.

I hope to see you in the air soon Tyler!

  4. I really enjoyed your website!! It is very well laid out and I will be utilizing your site for many ideas. I especially love the F-14 plane that you have on here. I have to get me one of those soon. I love the way that you reviewed each product and then listed them on one page.

    1. Hello Lonnie,

I’m glad that you like the website. Thank you for your positive feedback. I like to hear from my visitors and hear what you guys have to say.

I love the F-14 Tomcat as well. I think it’s the most beautiful airplane of all time next to the Super Marine Spitfire. The F-14 Tomcat is definitely worth the money and is the best RC electric jet in it’s class.

The attention to detail is what amazes me the most. I’ve seen some pretty awesome looking F-14’s in my time but nothing that looks this good it this price range.

Thanks again for your great feedback on the website and thank you for stopping by today!

  5. If I didn’t just buy a new drift chassis, I would be all over this, strictly to have in my collection. The F-14 Tomcat (Top Gun) was just such an iconic platform.

I have the Freewing F/A18-E V2 twin EDF with thrust vectoring, it also has a larger fan duct at 90mm and this is F1 with a few mods I got into it.

The price you got this at is decent for an ARF but for the plane that it is…worth every penny! This is definitely not for the novice flyer.

If you have never flown an RC plane, this would be a great shelf queen until you get your wings. Start with a top wing, single prop to start and work your way up from there.

It is always best to start with an RC flight simulator like REAL FLIGHT or Phoenix and you will save a lot of money in repairs.

Great Product Jack and you can trust that coming from someone who has 30+ years in the Hobby in the air, in the sea and on land and have roughly 60+ kits from day one.

I never buy used or sell my kits. I still have my first ever Traxxas Bullet and my favorite plane DeHavilland Beaver with floats..that’s a BEAST of a plane!!

I recently got into drifting…this is now my all-time favorite niche in the RC world! Great buy this Tomcat for X-mas right around the corner, any hobbyist would be stoked to get this big gem!

    1. Hello Jair,

It’s nice to meet another RC enthusiast! When I first saw this F-14 Tomcat for the very first time, I had to buy it and add it to my collection. It’s definitely the best looking airplane in the fleet!

There is no better F-14 in this scale. The price is very reasonable and worth every single penny and more. I also have the Freewing F/A18-E V2 twin EDF with thrust vectoring but I have not put it together yet.

That is my next project as soon as I get some free time to work on it. The F-14 Tomcat is not for a beginner. You will definitely crash this plane if you don’t know what you’re doing.

You made a great suggestion for new RC pilots about using RC flight simulators like REAL FLIGHT or Phoenix. This will definitely help new pilots learn the art of flying an RC airplane.

The last thing you new pilots want to do is crash a beautiful plane such as the F-14 Tomcat. You will definitely get off to the right start by training with an Rc Flight Simulator.

I would also suggest that new RC pilots look online for a local RC Club. Here you will be able to find an RC Plane instructor. This is a great way to learn how to fly hands on with an experienced RC Pilot.

Your DeHavilland Beaver sounds like an awesome plane to fly and I love the look of that particular airplane. I hope you do add the Freewing F-14 Tomcat to your collection. You won’t regret it!

I have my F-14 hanging from the ceiling in my man cave when I’m not flying. She looks beautiful hanging up there. Everybody loves that airplane almost as much as I do.

It’s always good to hear from another RC guy. Thank you for taking the time to talk about the F-14 Tomcat and other planes in your collection. Thanks for bringing up RC flight simulators.

You bring up a good point about learning to fly with an RC flight simulator first. I learned from a friend on mines dad when I was a kid. I was lucky to have someone show me the ropes.

These days with RC clubs and RC instructors, it’s never been easier to get into the hobby and the airplanes these days are outstanding. The technology has come a long way since I first started out in the hobby.

      Happy flying Jair!

  6. Great web page on the F-14 Tomcat. You obvious know a great deal about the fighter jet. I really enjoyed watching the model flying in your video. Looks and sounds like the real thing. I think the model is a steal for $689.99 on Amazon. You have provided a lot of good content on the F-14 and some great pictures and videos too. The model actually has moving parts just like the jet. Amazing. Very informative. Good luck with your webpage.

    1. Hi Mick,

I’m so glad that you enjoyed my article on the F-14 Tomcat. The 2 videos of the Freewing F-14 Tomcat in action show exactly what this plane is capable of.

The F-14 looks a lot better in person than it does in the video. You can clearly see how detailed it is and the super size scale makes all that much better.

I hope you also watched the video of the F-14’s last official flight. I just thought I’d add that video for all the F-14  enthusiasts out there.

The F-14 Tomcat is a steal at $689.99. You will not find another F-14 at this price and scale anywhere online. For less than a $1,000, anyone can have a lean mean flying machine like the Tomcat.

The F-14 has more than just moving parts, it also has steerable retracting landing gear and LED lights that really finish the model off nicely.

The cockpit is extremely detailed and comes with 2 pilots to add even more detail and realism to the F-14 Tomcat.

Thanks again for landing on my webpage and leaving such a great comment. I’m really happy that you enjoyed the post on the AMAZING F-14 Tomcat.

      Best of luck!

  7. When I was a kid, I used to build model planes. I’d meticulously paint every part before assembly and then meticulously glue each part together according to directions. Of course those little buggers didn’t fly . They were for display only.

Now that I’ve reached retirement age, I’m reading this review of the F14 Tomcat and feeling like this could be a new hobby. I’m no pilot, though, so I might just be content to watch someone else fly one. However, I publish a website for baby boomers, and I may have just been inspired to suggest your site to retired hobbyists. I particularly like that you have included a history of the Grumman F-14 tomcat in your review.

And thanks for making me reminisce about my youth!

    1. I used to build plastic model planes when I was a kid too! I remember painting each piece and painting the cockpit and pilots as well.

You brought back a lot of memories. Now, I like to build models that actually fly. The best thing about the F-14 Tomcat is they do most of the hard work for you such as the wiring, servos and LED lights.

The landing gear comes installed so you don’t have that much to assemble. The Freewing F-14 Tomcat comes pre-painted! All you have to do is add the decals.

I think we all have a little kid in us no matter how old we get. I think it’s a great idea to introduce RC flying to you baby boomer readers.

It’s affordable and a whole lot of fun! What’s nice being an older kid like myself is, being able to afford the toys I want. Like the F-14 for example.

I’m glad that you liked the history of the F-14 Tomcat. That is a very brief history. I could have wrote 10,000 more words but wanted to stay on point with the Freewing F-14 Tomcat.

Thank you so much for referring my website to your friends. I really appreciate that! I would like to also thank you for sharing your thoughts and bringing back my childhood memories.

I wish you all the luck in the world with your website. I hope to see you and your friends at the airfield sometime. Get yourself a trainer RC plane and get started today!

      Best Wishes and Happy Flying!
