Using Your Soldering Iron, Carefully Solder The New Cells To The Wires: Referring back to step #4., use your diagram or notes to wire the cells correctly before soldering your new cells in place. This is the most critical step. You must wire the cells correctly!

Step #7.

Carefully Place The New Cells Back Into The Battery Case: Once you place your cells back in the case, you can go ahead and solder the wires and cells in place.

  1. Before reading this article, I had no idea this was even possible. When laptop batteries go bad, I would just buy a new one. It’s a shame all of that money was wasted. I’m glad I read this for future reference because I know it will happen again! Considering that second tip, how exactly does it work? Thank you for sharing this because I know it hasn’t just saved me but many others as well! I hope to hear from you soon.

    1. Hi Aaron,

I’m glad you found the information on reconditioning laptop batteries useful. I have replaced quite a few laptop batteries over the years.

The new lithium batteries last longer but they eventually lose their ability to hold a charge as well. The only way to properly recondition your laptop battery is to replace the cells.

This is a great trick to know if you are willing to take the laptop battery apart and replace the cells. It takes a little bit of time to do it but it works every single time.

As far as freezing the laptop battery goes, I’m not sure why it works but it sometimes does. You can even recharge 9 volt and aa batteries this way too!

Thank you for visiting with us today and leaving your comment and question. Go ahead and try the freezer trick. It doesn’t always work but it’s worth the try.

      Best Wishes Aaron,

  2. I like the idea of refurbishing a laptop battery that you presented here. I am pretty handy with a soldering iron so, I think the next time my laptop battery goes kaput, I’ll buy some cells and give this a try.

As far as freezing, I have heard that 12 hours in the freezer is acceptable but, any more and there is a risk of the battery exploding. Have you heard of this?

And, supposedly, freezing NiMH or NiCD batteries are acceptable but, some say it is not safe to try the same approach with Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries. What do you think?

I have found that sometimes I can rejuvenate a battery by the recalibration technique. Run the battery down to 0% and charge it to 100%. If this is done at least 3 or 4 times, you can get it back up to about 30 minutes worth of charge.

    Good article! I enjoyed it!

    1. Hi Jim,

If you have soldering skills and the time and patience, reconditioning a lap top battery is easy and cheap. It doesn’t take that long to do and the results are amazing.

It’s exactly like buying a brand new battery. Replacing the cells will give your battery the same performance as a new one. You can recondition a lap top battery for half the price of a new battery.

As far as freezing goes, I’ve read there have been some cases of batteries exploding in the freezer. I have never had this happen to me. I’ve left batteries in the freezer for days without a problem.

You can freeze Lithium, NiMH or NiCD batteries. Freezing Lithium batteries will not always work but they will not be damaged. Ice crates do form on them and can be broken off with a small hammer.

Make sur you let the battery completely warm up to room temperature before using or you will damage the battery. NiMH and NiCD batteries work the same way when frozen and will not suffer any damage.

I have also had success recalibrating my lap top battery. Surprisingly, it works more often than not. I always try to recalibrate my lap top batteries before I do anything else.

Thank you for leaving your comment and great questions Jim. Reconditioning lap top batteries are easier to do than most people think. Heck! Most people don’t even know you can recondition a battery!

I’m glad you enjoyed the article and thanks again for visiting with us today. If you have any more questions or comments please don’t hesitate to leave them.

  3. This article is helpful for me. My laptop battery is draining fast! I need to replace it with a new battery. But I am afraid that it might cost more if I take it to laptop repair shop than buy new laptop. So if I buy a new battery, will it run longer! So I might buy it soon. Thanks!

    1. Hi Jeff,

I’m glad that you found the information about reconditioning lap top batteries useful. Reconditioning your battery is cheaper than buying a new one.

Sometimes you can recalibrate your lap top battery by running the battery down all the to 0% and then charge the battery until it is completely charged.

This will give extra battery time and extend the life of the battery. Thank you for for stopping by and leaving your comment and question. Try to recalibrate your lap top battery before buying a new one.
